Whosday

Okay, so I think I’ve decided that Tuesdays are going to be my day to geek out over books and movie and tv.  Hence calling it “Whosday.”  (This is mostly a tip of the hat to my enduring love of Doctor Who.)

I’ve just started reading the Matched book series.  I finished the first book, and am a little ways into the second.  It’s an interesting series.  Much like The Hunger Games, the main character, Cassia, is a girl living in a dystopian society.  Basically, Cassia signs up to be “matched” (have an arranged marriage decided by the government based on statistics) and she accidentally gets matched to two guys she knows.  Being matched to someone you know is a rarity, and being matched to more than one person just doesn’t happen.  There’s a war going on, but you don’t really get into that until you’re closer to the end of the first book.  The story is quite interesting, but the writing is a little difficult to read.  It feels like it needed one more rewrite before getting published, but I can’t really complain because I’m not the one who wrote it and making money off of it.

I’ve really been enjoying watching Go On.  It’s this show on NBC about this guy who’s wife dies, and he has to join a grief support group.  It’s an interesting take on death and grief.  I think what I like about it is the fact that they’re dealing with an incredibly uncomfortable subject.  I grew up surrounded by death and regularly attending funerals(granted it was other people’s losses, not my own, the fun of being a pastor’s kid), so it was something I grew up knowing about and talking about.  I remember what a shock to my system it was when I discovered how many of my peers had never attended a funeral.  I even had friends around whom I couldn’t even mention anything to do with death or funerals.  The show is funny and sweet, and just a little strange.  Plus, it’s really nice to see Matthew Perry on t.v. again (he was always my favorite on Friends).

-I really want to see Trouble With The Curve.

-I hate when it gets dark and I think it’s really late and then I realize that there’s still several hours until it gets late.

-I realize that I’m sounding kind of negative tonight.  I don’t mean to, and tomorrow I’ll be back to my normally semi-cheerful self.

Books and Such

The days are starting to get cooler.  It’s inevitable, of course.  North Dakota is land of much cold.  Apparently, we were spared from having a super cold last winter; there was really only one day I remember it being completely unbearable.  Much as I dread the cold, after such a hot summer I’m treasuring the chill the in the air.

I’ve mentioned before that I really love my job, and today was no exception.  Things were a little slow this afternoon, but that was okay because I got to do shelf reading.  Basically, I have a row of books that I get to go through book by book and make sure they’re all in order.  I realize that this probably doesn’t sound terribly fun, but I find it to be a soothing activity.  (Yes, I’m just that weird!)  Working in the library, I frequently find myself feeling very small (and not just because I’m so short I have to have a stool to reach some of the books).  It’s a marvel to me to be surrounded by the words written by so many people.  Thousands and thousands of people who all wrote something that will outlast them.  Today I encountered something written hundreds of years ago.  The author is long gone, but they wrote is still needed by someone now.  How amazingly epic is that?

Speaking of books, here’s something delightful I found on Pinterest:

I know it’s not really that important, but sometimes I’m really happy that my parents introduced me to Doctor Who long before it was something that was so well known.  However, I’m happy that it’s more well known now.  People are less likely to look at me like I’ve lost my mind when I mention Whovian things.  Also, Adipose!

Here I was, thinking I wasn’t going to get to see the new episode of Doctor Who, and I was totally wrong.  Last night I got to see Asylum of the Daleks, and I was very impressed.  The writing was excellent, it was the perfect balance of funny and slightly scary, and best of all, there were Daleks!  (The Daleks were very absent last season and sorely missed.)

My biggest concern going into this season was the new companion.  The best and worst part of Who is the fact that they change it frequently enough to keep it fresh.  Every few years a new companion is introduced, and some take longer to like than others.  The new companion was in Asylum, and I felt that her introduction was a bit reminiscent of the introduction we were given to River Song.  I’m really curious to see how it’s all going to work out with her.  However, I really liked her.  I think she’ll be a nice change of pace from Amy and Rory.

All in all, I can’t wait for the rest of the season!

Happy September!

Well, September is officially upon us.  It’s Labor Day weekend, which means I’m spending my time working through homework and studying.  I got to watch the first Husker game of the season this afternoon, and by “watched” I mean that I had it on while I worked on Spanish.  All in all, though, it was a pretty decent game.  Right now I’m watching Return of the Jedi on Spike.  I’m trying to figure out if their showing one of Lucas’ newer versions, or if it looks so much better because this is the first time I’m watching it on my new television.  (I should clarify.  I mean it looks better in that the colors are more vivid and the overall picture is much sharper.)

When it comes to exercise, August was kind of a disaster.  I’m determined to not let September face the same fate.  Hence, tomorrow I will get back to walking, aerobics, and other general stretching.  The plan was to do so tonight, but I’ve had some issues arise that will keep that from happening.

Season 7 of Doctor Who began tonight.  I don’t have BBC America, so I was unable to watch it.  That’s okay though, it’s no different that any other season of Who.   I’m just super excited that the new season is this year, because I was under the impression that it wasn’t going to start until 2013.  Also, I’m really looking forward to the western episode that has Ben Browder.  (He’s Crichton from Farscape, and he was in the final couple of seasons of SG1).

Oh look, it’s Princess Leia in a gold bikini.  Man, that had to have been an incredibly uncomfortable costume.

I’m so glad I didn’t live a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
