I’m Starting To Think The Helicopter Monkey Theory Is Not That Far-Fetched

Last summer at the San Diego Comic Con, the following video was shown:

As you can see, the survival of the fall was “explained.”

We Sherlock fans are one of the most patient fan groups on the planet.  Okay, maybe patient is the wrong word, but it’s pretty amazing how long we will wait  for the next three episodes.  And was the wait worth it?

Oh, yes!  (Imagine I said that in my best David Tennant impression.)

So, here is what I loved:

-The humor.  This was definitely the funniest Sherlock I’ve ever seen.

-Mary.  I wasn’t sure if I’d like her, but it was instant love.  She’s such a good fit with both John and Sherlock.  Also, I think it’s really cool that she’s Martin Freeman’s wife in real life.

-Molly.  Awe, all the Molly kisses!  I’ve always loved Molly, mostly because she’s so sweet and always seems to pick the wrong guy.  (Side note: Is her new guy gay, or was there something I was missing?  I just assumed he was, and it was a moment they were using to show how much Sherlock had changed since he called Moriarty out when the creep was with Molly.)

-The writing.

-The scenes where Sherlock is going to his friends so they know he’s alive.

-Trading out a menu for an identical menu.

-Operation

One final thought; can someone explain to me what was going on when there was the flash and then Sherlock was explaining how he survived to Anderson?  Was this something he was telling John, and we were just seeing what Sherlock was remembering?  I’m used to the show being a bit trippy.  It’s something I genuinely enjoy about the show, but I am genuinely confused about what was happening.

P.S.  On a completely different note, can someone please give Joanne Froggatt all the awards for the brilliant job she’s doing with her role as Anna on Downton?  She’s been absolutely brilliant, and had me in tears.

If you’ve not seen the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, slowly back away and go watch it.   Seriously, I’m not going to hold back.  I’m about to spoil it with so many spoilers.

If you’ve seen it, or if you just don’t care, keep reading.

I was one of those fortunate few that got to see the episode on a really big screen, and it was even more fantastic than I hoped it would be.  I just got home a bit ago, and the feels are still really fresh, so I’m just going to fangirl for a few minutes.

One of the most fun parts of going to see it in the theater was being surrounded by hundreds of other Whovians.  Even better?  Some of those Whovians were in costume.

Oh, and K9 was there, too!

Then, there was the episode…which was amazing!!!!!!

First, there was a “Please behave yourself in the theater” video presented by Strax and his fellow clones.  Then, to tell us it was time to put on our 3D glasses there was this whole bit with Tennant and Smith do a back and forth bit of banter.

A list of amazing things from the episode…

1.  The return of David Tennant…and his hair!

2.  The return of Rose, even if she was only a computer interface.

3.  The screwdrivers!

4.  Clara pointing out that 3 geniuses didn’t bother to check to see if the door was locked.

5.  The opening credits.

6.  Peter Capaldi’s eyes.  Seriously, the man has amazing eyes.  I’m so excited to see what he’s going to do with the role.

7.  The Daleks.

8.  The line about kissing the Bad Wolf Girl…and Bad Wolf Girl’s response.   And Ten’s reaction to the exchange.

To me, there are two things that stick out more than anything else.  First, the constant image of Rose being right next to Ten, but he was unable to see her.   Knowing their history, it was really heartbreaking, and yet so perfect.  Second, however, is what made it all worth it: The Curator.

I had really hoped that Tom Baker would be in this episode, but knowing his age, and that they can just add some make-up to make him look like he did in the 1970’s, I had my doubts he would truly be there.  When he showed up, I cried.

This episode really was the perfect gift to us fans.

“I Don’t Want To Go”

These words turned me into a sobbing mess a few years ago.  David Tennant was leaving Who, and as far as I was concerned there was no way anyone could ever equal his fantasticness (yes, that is totally a word).  In case you have no clue what I’m talking about, here’s the clip:

So, yes, it was incredibly dramatic, and it took me quite a while before I would watch any of the new episodes with Matt Smith.  However, my love of the story won out, and eventually I caved and got sucked into the Amy/Rory/River story.  Honestly, I was never the biggest Amy fan, but I loved Rory and River, so it was okay.  Then Clara came along, and I absolutely adore her.  I’ve really enjoyed the stories in the last 3 seasons, but I’ve never turned into a huge Matt Smith fan.  I think he’s done a good job, and has certainly gotten better as time has passed.  However, I’ve been ready for the next regeneration since the end of season 5.

If you can’t guess, I’m in the minority on this one.

See, there’s a lot of people who are experiencing the emotions I felt when Tennant left.  I’ve read everything from “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” to “The show must be cancelled, because there’s no other reason Matt Smith would leave.”  Well, all I can say is, “Welcome to Doctor Who.”

Up until a few years ago most people weren’t aware of the quirky little show.  Sometime between season 1 and season 5 (Doctors 9-11), the majority of the world realized there was this fantastic, absurb, wonderful show made by the BBC.

This is why everyone is so upset.  For them, Matt Smith was the first Doctor.  Sure, they know that there were loads of other Doctors.  They may even be able to name them (number and corresponding actor).  However, none of those other Doctors introduced them to the TARDIS, and Daleks, and Cybermen, and Weeping Angels, and Ice Warriors, and the Sonic Screwdriver, and well, you get the idea.  Matt introduced so many to Who, and that’s absolutely fantastic.

However, for those that are about to experience the regeneration of “their” Doctor, this is going to be an incredibly difficult rest of the year.  So, if you’re like me and this isn’t your first rodeo, sit back and enjoy the ride.  If, however, this is your first time to experience this, let me tell you…It will be awful.  It will actually be worse than you prepare yourself for.  However, in August 2014 (I believe that’s when the season 8 is due to premiere), grit your teeth, tune in, and watch the episodes.  Yes, the next Doctor will not be Eleven.  It will be someone new with a completely different take and approach to our favorite Time Lord.  It will be hard.  Then, it will get a little easier.  Eventually, you’ll either find yourself in the boat I’m in currently (enjoying the show, but anxiously awaiting the next regeneration), or you’ll come to love the new Doctor almost as much as you love Eleven.

Now, onto the super important question.  Who’s my pick for the 12th Doctor?  Well, I doubt that it would ever happen, but my pick would be Robert Carlyle.

He’s currently doing a fantastic job as Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin on Once Upon A Time, and that seems like a gig that’s going to keep going for a while.  True, he’s not as young as Matt Smith or David Tennant, but he’s got a charm and a darkness that would be perfect for Who.

Random Saturday Musings

–Oz: The Great and Powerful opened this weekend, and so far all reports I’ve heard from friends are in the positive.  I am anxiously awaiting my turn to see it!

-I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what brings two people together and makes them consider marriage.  I’ve known people who got married simply because they thought the other person had a cute butt (also, looking back, I think there may have been alcohol involved in their decision as well).  What amazed me was that these people were confused as to why they didn’t have a great marriage.  Then, there’s people who marry someone who seems like their perfect counterpart, and things either go brilliantly, or fall apart so terribly it makes others question whether marriage is really that great of an idea.  After watching The Mirror Has Two Faces again (for the umpteenth time) last week, I have to agree with the idea of marrying your very best friend.  I know this isn’t a new thought on planet Earth.  That’s how it should be.  You should marry someone who knows you better than anyone else.  Someone who knows why you do the strange, quirky things you do, and finds it all endearing.  Now, I have no magical idea that marriage is a happy-happy fun time wonderland.  In fact, I know just from observation that it’s ridiculously hard.  It’s tons of work.  Why would you want to try to tackle that with someone who isn’t your best friend, and doesn’t really know you that well?

-Realizing that my weight truly is something I’m using as a defense, I’m making moves forward (somewhat drastic moves, for me at least) to deal with it.  I find myself, sometimes several times a day, having to tell those memories of hurt, “You have no power over me!”  It’s all very Labyrinth.  It’s true, though.  Just because something happened doesn’t mean that it has any right to control who I am or what I do.  Yes, everything that happens serves to shape the person we become, but to live in fear and bondage and pain isn’t okay.

-Every time I watch Thor I come back with the same two questions.  Spoiler-ish alert.  1.  How is it that Thor manages to return to Earth in Avengers?  The end of Thor kind of left him stuck at Asgard.  Is Thor 2 going to solve this?  2.  Why are people such big fans of Loki?  Sure, he’s a great bad guy, but I’m a little weirded out by how girls seem so drawn to him.  He’s malicious and greasy.  Also, the way he toys with those around him is kind of emotionally abusive.

-Daylight Savings Time.  Not really looking forward to it, but am awfully glad there’ll be an extra hour of daylight each evening.

-I solved the issue of fans being mad that–Spoiler Alert!–Matthew was left the way he was at the end of Downton‘s most recent season. At the beginning of next season, he should suddenly regenerate into David Tennant, and we find out that he’s actually The Doctor.  Also, I would love to see the Maggie Smith character as a companion!

 

“I’m a whole lot hotter than I look.”

For Christmas, I got the movie The Decoy Bride.  Here’s the trailer, just to get you up to speed on what I’m talking about:

It’s a very predictable film, but incredibly sweet and funny, so it’s worth a watch.  Plus, David Tennant is the love interest, so it’s hard not to enjoy it.

The reason I loved this film was because it felt very relateable, or rather Kelly MacDonald’s character was relateable.  The first time I heard her line about “hotter than I look,” all I could think was “That’s exactly how I feel about myself.”  When I’m not near a mirror, I tend to think of myself as a lot prettier and a lot slimmer.  I also tend to think that I’m witty, clever, and generally delightful.

Today was a rare day when, once I got dressed and did my makeup and hair, I actually felt pretty.  Not hot or anything like that, but definitely more attractive than usual.  To that end, I decided to make today’s photo a first for me.  I decided to take one of those infamous bathroom mirror shots.  Although, I don’t think I did it right, because I wasn’t holding the camera when I took the picture.  So, here’s the photo:

Now, I could’ve cropped the picture, but I thought the hair straightener sticking out into the photo was such a “classy” touch.
